Bottle gourd sambar / சுரைக்காய் சாம்பார்

thoor dhal - 150 gm
turmeric powder -half tsp
bottle gourd pieces - 3 - 4 cups
tomato - 1
onion - 1 ( optional)
tamarind water  from small lemon size
chopped coriander leaves - 2 tbsp
sambar powder - 4 tsp
green chilli - 2
salt - to taste.

for tempering :
oil - 1 tbsp
mustard seeds - 1 tsp
dried red chillies - 2
curry leaves - 2 arc.
asafoetida- 1/4 - 1/2 tsp

Steps to follow:
Pressure cook  thoor dhal along with turmeric powder  and keep aside.

 In the same cooker add bottle gourd pieces ,chopped  onion(optional) ,tomatoes, green chillies, tamarind water and sambar powder.
 Pressure cook for one whistle.Switch off.
 Open the lid  after pressure released, then add the cooked dhal. Add salt to taste.. Mix well.
Let it boil. Switch off.
Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds, red chillies  and curry leaves, when it splutter add asafoetida and transfer the tempering to the sambar.

Bottle gourd sambar is ready to serve.Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
Serve  hot with rice,idli and dosa. It is really delicious.
