Yam Theeyal / Senai Theeyal / சேனைத் தீயல்

Yam – 1/4 kilo
Black Bengal gram – 50 gm
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt – to taste.
 Roast and paste:
Grated coconut – 3tbsp
Coriander powder – 2tsp
Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
Cumin powder – half tsp
Fennel powder – 1/2 tsp
Garam masala – half tsp
Onion big– 1
Tomato big – 1
To tempering:
Oil – 3tbsp
Mustard & fenugreek seed – each half tsp
Curry leaves – few
Dried red chilli- 1
Onion chopped – 1
Grated ginger garlic or paste – each 1 tsp

Steps to follow

Peel and wash, slice the yam and cook with turmeric powder and keep aside.
Soak well the black bengal gram and pressure cook and keep aside.
Add 1 tsp oil in a pan and add all above said ingredients one by one to roast. After

roasted let it cool and add little water and paste it.
In a heavy bottomed vessel heat oil add mustard and fenugreek seed, curry leaves, dried 
red chilli when it splutters add chopped onion and grated ginger and garlic. Saute well.

 Add the ground coconut masala paste and sauté again.
 Then add cooked yam pieces and cooked bengal gram.
 Add salt to taste & half cup of water.
  Stir well and let it cook for 5 minutes in a low flame. 

 Garnish with chopped coriander and serve with hot plain rice.

I like your simple recipes. You are reminding me of so many of my mother's recipes which I had forgotten.
